The chickens love their home

We currenty have 3 types of chickens that we are breeding currently at Bruskotter Farms.  They are Aracauna (blue and black), Buckeyes, Marans (blue copper, black copper, blue, splash) and Orpingtons (blue and black).  The cochins come in mutliple colors.  The Aracaunas lay a blue/green egg while the Marans lay a very dark, chocolate brown egg.  Buckeye chickens are the only breed of chicken developed in Ohio and the only breed of chicken to be developed by a woman.  They are also known for the mousing ability.

Buckeye chickens are the only breed of chicken developed in Ohio and the only breed to be developed by a woman.  They are an excellent dual purpose breed being a good sized chicken that lays a large brown egg.  They are a deep red in color and do not have a large comb so do well in colder weather.  They are known to be mousers and are excellent in a free range system.

Muscovy ducks are another addition to Bruskotter Farms.  Muscovy ducks are a South American breed, unlike most of the other ducks seen in barnyards are European in origin.  Muscovys are known for their fly eating abilities.  They have been brought here for a natural form of fly control.  We will probably have ducklings available for sale at certain times.

We have chosen the midget white turkey.  In a blind taste test against other heritage breeds and a butterball, the midget white came in first place.  We are very excited about this opportunity.  And here they are.  We ordered 15, 10 survived.  We've got 4 toms and 6 hens.  I'll keep you posted after trying one to see if they are as tasty as hoped

Aracauna chickens are well known for many things.  They can be 'rumpless' or have a tail and they have very fluffy cheeks.  But they are best known for laying a blue or green egg.  They are a smaller chicken and the eggs are medium sized.  Egg customers love the addition of some color to their egg carton.  It's quite a conversation piece.

This is our chicken tractor similar to Joel Salatin's chicken tractor but, if I put some muscle to it, I can drag it around the yard without a tractor.  We currently have our meat chicks in the tractor.  They are Freedom Ranger chicks and are known for doing very well on pasture.  Freedom ranger chicks are derived from a French meat breed.  They take a bit longer to mature (as compared to cornish rock crosses).  It takes about 8-10 weeks for full maturity.  They are an active, fun breed.

Orpingtons are a large chicken with a large comb.  They lay a large brown egg.  They are a great dual purpose breed.  The most common color is buff but we focus on the blue and black orpingtons.  They are a very calm chicken and have done well in our free range system.
